What is legal AI?
Legal AI is an artificial intelligence system designed for legal work: research on official legislative and case-law sources, analysis of documents and contracts, assisted drafting. It differs from general-purpose AI in three ways: its sources are verifiable and cited; its context is the firm's case file, official sources and selected web sources; every step remains traceable. Lidia is an Italian legal AI platform, with data kept in the European Union.
What is the difference between asking an AI a question and giving it a job to do?
A question produces an answer; legal work is made of steps (searching, comparing, extracting, drafting) to be carried out in the right order. Lidia breaks the goal down into these steps, runs them in sequence and shows the path it took. This is what legal research and Lidia Workflows do: specialised agents that proceed in logical, traceable and verifiable steps, with the professional always in the loop.
How does AI-powered legal research work?
AI legal research starts from a natural-language question rather than Boolean strings. Lidia queries official legislative and case-law sources organised with GraphRAG technology, which connects legislation, judgments and documents, and Lidia's agents return the answer with references to the texts used. When research needs to go beyond official sources, an in-house web research agent extends the scope to online sources.
Can artificial intelligence analyse and draft contracts?
Yes, within a clear limit: the AI produces the analysis and the draft; the lawyer decides and signs. Lidia reads even very long contracts, with advanced OCR on PDFs and scans, identifies clauses, compares them with the firm's precedents and supports drafting inside Microsoft Word, where the text is reviewed as always, with Lidia's help. With Smart Answer you can query a single document of up to 1,000 pages.
Can legal AI make mistakes? How do you check an answer?
It can, like any generative system. That is why the way the answer is delivered matters: Lidia cites the documents and sources it relied on and makes every step of its reasoning inspectable, so checking is a matter of reading, not reconstructing. Human review remains mandatory on every output.
Do my firm's documents end up in AI models?
No. No data is transmitted to or retained by LLM providers, and no data is used to train their models. AWS infrastructure with EU data residency, encryption at rest and in transit, ISO/IEC 27001, CSA STAR Level 1, ISO 9001, GDPR compliance.
Does AI replace the lawyer's work?
